Photography for Beginners

Apertures, shutter speeds, ISO settings, white balance, creative modes, exposure techniques, composition, exposure metering, depth of field, focusing ... ‘Where do I start?’ If this is something you can identify with then we are very glad you are reading this and visiting our website!

Learning photography can be very confusing when you are a complete beginner. Nowadays digital cameras can be very sophisticated which is both a plus and a minus when starting out. Although there are lots of wonderful pre-sets and modes that ‘do it all for you’, understanding how these work and how they can make your photography better can sometimes be really baffling.

This is where we step in. Many photographic manufacturers assume that just because you purchase a camera you will automatically be familiar with the jargon and language used in handbooks and manuals but many new photographers find this so daunting a prospect that they often shut the book, flick to ‘automatic or program setting’ and never progress from there. The camera will do a passable job – often produce quite nice images and with a bit of fiddling with software they will do...
But learning photography as a beginner need not be scary at all as we have a wide choice of options to suit anyone who picks up a camera and wants to improve, whether it is a digital compact or DLSR, or a traditional film camera.

Our 1:1 day photographic workshops are one of the best ways to improve your photographic skills when you are a complete beginner. You will learn how to understand the camera functions and settings whilst getting practical experience and have plenty of time to master each photographic technique. The day is designed to suit you and allow plenty of time to progress at a pace that you are comfortable with. It is possible to go from absolute beginner to working with manual settings in just six hours!

If you prefer to take things a little more gently and like the company and camaraderie of group learning then we have our very popular Stepping Stones photography courses on offer to photographic beginners. These cover all the main techniques and subjects you will need to ensure that when you finish the course you will feel both confident and competent when you are taking photographs. The course is a mixture of six classroom sessions and two full day practical sessions.

Alternatively we run location workshops for small groups of photographers, and beginners are very welcome on these. What better way to learn than to be in an inspiring location with photographic opportunities and photography tuition on tap throughout? We choose locations that we are familiar with so you get the best photo opportunities on the day.

So if you are a beginner, novice, greenhorn, newbie or whatever you choose to call yourself (!) we would be delighted to inspire you to become more confident and get the most out of whatever camera choice you make and we look forward to meeting you in the future.
